Environmental Sustainability Initiatives

OUR CORE DIRECTION

City University Malaysia aims to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This target encompasses reducing direct emissions (Scope 1) from sources owned or controlled by the organization, as well as reducing indirect emissions (Scope 2) from purchased electricity, heating, and cooling. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 implies that any remaining emissions  atmospheric carbon would be balanced out by carbon removal or offsetting measures, resulting in no net contribution todioxide levels. Many organizations, governments, and institutions are adopting similar targets to align with global efforts to mitigate climate change.

In building the sustainability foundations for our future City University has built-in key sustainability features into the refurbishment of a campus in Petaling Jaya, our new campus in Johor and our forthcoming campus in Cyberjaya.

Our new campus and campus management system incorporates our sustainability vision, policy and practices directly into our day-to-day activities covering:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Water conservation
  • Reducing and recycling
  • Encouraging green-transport options

OUR CLIMATE-FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY

Our vision is to create a climate-friendly university within an open urban garden campus.

One of the key statements of our campus refurbishment is its enthusiastic dedication to going green and being energy efficient. Passive green design features such as open corridors, cross ventilation, rain water harvesting, energy efficient lighting, use of recycled materials, sunlight shading and harvesting of natural day light will be incorporated throughout the campus.

GREEN MATERIALS

We have sourced local, sustainable and lightweight materials, concrete blocks, as well as an interplay of windows and glass boxes to capture natural light and shadows. In an effort to create a conducive learning environment for the students within a Green tropical campus solid walls are located at the east and west sides of the building, with more openings at the north and south sides.

We have also used warm materials at ground level to provide socialising spaces for the students, which expresses the concept of ‘celebrating the journey of our students’ at every place for meetup. The overall objective of the design was to construct a sustainable academic building within an urban setting.

ENERGY CONSERVATION

Our main sustainability effort has focused on our environmental footprint from our buildings and energy management. City University is committed to monitoring and reducing our energy footprint across our campuses and promoting energy awareness among our stakeholders.

A significant source of energy use is in air-conditioning of our large campus floorspace. To address this, energy efficiency is promoted through our air-conditioning system for our buildings which employ a chilled water system with cooling tower and air distribution systems using fabric ducts. Energy use for air-conditioning is also reduced in service lobbies, toilets and mechanical and electrical plant rooms using natural ventilation.

As an addition to our innovation credit, PIBCV valves are installed for all AHU and FCU chilled water control, LED TV provided in the student lounge or main lobby where real time of energy and water consumption are displayed.

At least 50% of the glazed façade will be shaded to reduce direct solar radiation and glare towards the building reducing the need for energy consuming air-conditioning.

WATER CONSERVATION

City University is committed to monitoring and reducing our water use across our campuses and promoting water conservation.

The design of our campus will ensure that potable water consumption will be reduced by 50% using water efficient fittings and 50% for irrigation use through rainwater harvesting.

REDUCING AND RECYCLING

City University is committed to monitoring and reducing our use of resources and raising awareness of resource use and recycling among our stakeholders.

  • We have reduced the use of paper by moving to online options in our Learning Management System (LMS) for students through which materials are provided in electronic format
  • Use of paper in administration is reduced using ‘no-paper’ protocols and measuring and monitoring paper use from purchasing and electronic tracking of printing and photocopying
  • We have recycling options for all stakeholders using our campus including facilities to recycle waste in easily available and well-located recycling bins

These initiatives complement our main sustainability efforts to reduce our footprint through our building and energy management.

TRANSPORTATION

As part of our transportation policy City University is committed to monitoring and reducing our environmental footprint by promoting public transport and environmentally friendly transport options among our stakeholders including:

  • LRT Asia Jaya, located 5 minutes away from City University Malaysia is the most convenient mode of Transportation for students who do not drive. With connecting lines to the MRT and KTM Lines, students can travel all around Klang Valley at an affordable price.
• Separate parking for green vehicles will be introduced as part of our campus redesign including hybrid and electric vehicles as well as vehicles involved in pooled and ride-sharing options

BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY INTO TEACHING, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

We are committed to building sustainability awareness into our learning and thought-leadership environment to encourage everyone in our community to prioritise sustainable living.

City University Interior Design Department, Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment ( FoABE) lead by Mr Muzamil Mutalib is proud to announce that four of our Interior Design students has been nominated as Top 12 for the Asia Young Designer Award 2021 finalist (AYDA) and the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) REKA AWARDS for their work incorporating sustainability ideas.

Focusing in providing solution towards various social and environmental issues, our finalist students presented four design proposals as stated below:

  • Amirah Afiqah bt Abdullah, Project Bakau, Mangrove Ecosystem Cultural and Research Centre
  • Nur Faizah Binti Sirajudeen, Project Escape, a Child Trafficking Prevention and Protection Centre
  • Jasmine Najiha Binti Mohd Fathee, Project Kongsi, a Refugees Sharing Shelter Centre
  • Andrew Charles Odigie, Project Runtuh, Cameron Highlands Landslide Disaster Centre.
